If you’re stuck on costume ideas I’d recommend checking out Kool for Kats on Brighton Road. They have a huge range of costumes for hire and sale at really good prices (my daughter and I found ours there last weekend).
We’re very excited for what will be a great week of celebrating all things bookish.
Happy reading,

Nomination – Picture book of the year
Mechanica by Lance Balchin is a stunning visual feast that brings an original idea to life. Mechanica is set in future earth where the environment is polluted and wildlife is extinct… this gives rise to a new style of ‘wildlife’ which will not be controlled by human kind…
The book is a field guide to a range of species and is both entertaining and provocative at once. Have you read this book yet? Will it have your vote for Picture Book of the Year?
Nomination – Book of the year, younger readers
I loved this book about Jimmy Cook, a third grade kid, majorly obsessed with Captain James Cook. When he learns from his mother (how annoying that she was right!) that Captain Cook was killed in Hawaii he concocts a madcap plan to get to Hawaii and finish the discoveries Captain Cook began. This is a fun read with great characters, that kids of all ages will enjoy… But will it take out the prize?
Eve Pownall Award for Information Book nomination – “A-Z of Endangered Animals”
This is a beautiful book and children will love reading the quirky facts for every animal whilst learning about their conservation status.
Watch a talk with the author here Jennifer Cossins talks about A-Z
What do you think? I love it!
The Children’s Book Council of Australia announced its notables list last week of those books under consideration for the annual Book Week Awards. I have read many of the books and there are some beautiful books among them. If you’re interested in looking at the list, click here
Our first book club catalogue was sent home last week. Thank you to all the families who have ordered and earned commission for our library, we love your work!
What an amazing week we had! Andrew Joyner delighted us with his entertaining, fun and formative drawing workshops, we laughed as we watched Fair Dinkum the musical performance and finished off the week with a breakfast book club and whole school costume parade.
What a week, what fun!
Check out our Book Club members in their outstanding costumes.
Thank you to all the parents who supported this whole school event by funding the performance costs and supporting their children with costumes… How wonderful it is for our community to come together and share a LOVE of books.

What a hectic start it’s been to the term. I had a lovely break with my family and enjoyed reading my way through the shortlisted books for the Children’s Book Council of Australia. As always, there is a fantastic range and selection, and each and every book is well worth reading.
If you’re interested in the shortlisted titles, click here CBCA_Short_List_Books for the full list.
I have been working and planning for Book Week for months now and am very excited about what promises to be a fun filled reading journey for our students. I am delighted to announce that Andrew Joyner, acclaimed illustrator and author will be visiting our school from Monday 22nd – Wednesday 24th August. Andrew has written and illustrated many beautiful picture books, and is perhaps most famous for The Terrible Plop, a collaboration with Ursula Dubosarsky and the shortlisted book from 2012 Too many elephants in this house. I have had Andrew visit at my previous school and he is a captivating speaker who the children will love hearing and drawing with. If you’d like to find out more about Andrew, visit his fantastic website Words and pictures Andrew Joyner We are very fortunate that the school covers the cost of visiting authors, which is about $3.50/student.
On Thursday 25th August, we will have Perform musicals visit to showcase their interpretation of the Book Week Theme with a performance of Fair Dinkum. There will be a charge of $6.50/child, with invoices and permission slips to be sent home next week.
There will of course be a dress up parade where children are invited to dress up as their favourite book character, preferably an Australian character, or something from our country’s story. I am also working on a dedicated Book Week assembly with Chris Braybrook and her Year 6/7 class. We are still negotiating the times and logistics of this as Term 3 (like every term at CLG!) is incredibly hectic. I will share information with you as soon as I can.
As if this is not enough, Book Club brochures have arrived and will be sent home next week. If you wish to purchase from this catalogue (of course there is no pressure!), please remember that we only accept online payments through the Loop Portal click here for more information
