WELCOME BACK

Welcome back!  I hope you enjoyed a fabulous break and managed to read for pleasure.  I know I certainly enjoyed savoring some lazy afternoons with some beautiful books.

Thank you to everyone who attended the first Book Club of the year on the last Friday of school.  We enjoyed sharing our reading experience and love of the book  Wonder.

Scholastic Book Club brochures will go home today, with orders due on Friday 11th May.  As always there is absolutely no pressure to purchase from the catalogue, but feel free to do so as every dollar spent supports our school library.

Our annual Book Fair is just around the corner, so keep May 28 and 29 free to support our major fundraiser.

It’s been fantastic to see so many children complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge already – keep up the great work everyone.

Happy reading!

We certainly have a wonderful reading community.

NURTURING A COMMUNITY OF READERS @ CLG

Congratulations are once again in order to 99.7% of our students who completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge in 2017.  That’s another fantastic effort which demonstrates again the wonderful way our home and school community work together to achieve fantastic results for our kids.

I love this quote – but would like to add, with beautiful books and stories borrowed from their libraries.

Knowing that we are nurturing a love of reading at CLG it got me thinking and wondering, just who is reading what, and how much?  I thought you might be interested to know that…

Our library has loaned 28,878 items this school year.  Fiction books are our most popular item (10,929 loans as of Tuesday morning), followed by Picture Fiction (4,804) and Junior Fiction (4,556).  Non-Fiction books are popular also (4,348) loans.

So how many books are different aged children borrowing?

R/1 – 4,766 loans  (average 25 loans / student)

Year 2 – 2,481 loans  (average 40 loans / student)

Primary (3-5) -11,708 (average 42 books / student)

Year 6/7 – 3,683 (average 27 books / student)

It’s great to see our kids borrowing so many books and ensuring that our school library is truly the vibrant hub of our school.  How lucky are we?

Creating a space for our kids to love – and we’re reaping the rewards

When I commenced as teacher librarian at CLG in 2015, I inherited a beautiful collection and a somewhat lack lustre space with loads of potential.  I have been working and planning for nearly 7 terms to re imagine, redesign and reinvent the space to create a welcoming, child friendly retreat for our school community.

To realise this dream, we have invested a lot of time and money into furniture and accessories to make this happen… And we LOVE how the space has been transformed in 18 months…

Our new chillax reading space…

img_6172

Our beautiful new spinners – that are now numbered on the spinners and in the catalogue, so our kids can EASILY find the books they’re looking for…

img_6173

Our Junior Fiction books now housed in boxes so our younger readers will find it easier to locate the books they’re looking for…

These changes contributed to a 35% increase in student borrowing over the past two years.  And while many often comment “what a quiet little place to work”, you might be surprised to learn that we have had 27,534 loans to date this year, 25,288 of which are student loans.

Our kids are reading more than ever and we are ecstatic that our school once again achieved 100% completion of the Premier’s Reading Challenge… Coincidence you ask – I don’t think so!

I feel very fortunate to work in such a wonderful school community and am very grateful for the support and value CLG leadership have placed in our library.  In an educational culture where many schools are withdrawing funding from libraries and ceasing to invest in teacher librarians, I count my blessing everyday to find myself working at CLG.

Happy reading

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB & PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE

prcPremier’s Reading Challenge finishes this FRIDAY 9th of SEPTEMBER

Our school tally is at 604, with just a handful of kids left to finish (most of who are only one book away). As Friday is a school closure day and Monday is a Pupil Free Day, we will accept PRC forms on Tuesday for those who forget to hand them up this week.

SCHOLASTIC

Thank you to the wonderful families who ordered through our last Scholastic Book Club catalogue.  I am delighted to say that the sales earned our library about $500 in commission to spend on books.

I am using this money to buy class novel sets and to purchase Book Wishes (student requests).

Thank you for your generous support – happy reading!

Happy Little Vegemites – Premier’s Reading Challenge 2016

Each year we like our students to create something to add to a whole school display as they finish the Premier’s Reading Challenge.  The theme/idea is usually linked to the Book Week theme, which for this year is “Australia – Story Country”.  Linking in with this idea, we have chosen to get our readers to be “Happy Little Reading Vegemites” and decorate their own Vegemite jar with their name and picture.

Classes will be viewing the historic advertisement so they can appreciate Vegemite’s role in Australia’s story, and for many of us, the story of our childhood.  Here’s the original clip below if you’re interested in taking a look!

Welcome Back!

I’m very excited to be back at school and am looking forward to seeing all of our students give our books some serious loving! I hope you enjoyed a well deserved break and enjoyed relaxing with many great books, as I did.  2016 is shaping up to be a very busy and hectic year and I’m very excited about some new projects we’ll be launching this year.

prc

February 1st is the official start date and we are once again aiming for 100% completion at our fantastic school.  Student recording sheets are in class folders ready to go – so what are you waiting for?  Get reading!

REVIEW CREW

I am so excited to announce that we will be starting a REVIEW CREW during lunch breaks on Thursdays.  This is a club open for students from Year 3 upward who would like to be involved in the library.  Our crew will help select books for purchase, write reviews, help with displays and learn how to shelve in the library.  I can’t wait to kick this off from Week 2.  Interested kids will be asked to attend an information session this Thursday in the library.

PARENTS and KIDS BOOK CLUB

I am keen to set up a Parents and Kids book club to run within our school this year.  The club will be open for Year 3 students upward (and a parent) and will meet twice a term after school hours at a time to be negotiated.  I would love to hear from you if you would like to be involved, please email simone.petherick915@schools.sa.edu.au

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB

Book Club is back in 2016 after a very successful return to our school last year.  We have the first catalogues and will send them home this week, with all orders due by Friday 19th February (Week 3).  Remember orders can only be made online through the Loop Portal at https://mybookclubs.scholastic.com.au/Parent/ClubManagement.aspx

HIGHLIGHTED BOOK OF THE WEEK

“The Good Guys” by Aaron Blabley.  I LOVED this book and know it will be popular with all our students who appreciate graphic novels and great humour!  It has also been recently nominated for an Indy Book Prize.  Check out the trailer below.

Happy Reading!
